Women's Small/Medium RARE 1890's Black Two Layer Decorative Cotton Victorian Evening Cape Collar Close-upWomen's Small/Medium RARE 1890's Black Two Layer Decorative Cotton Victorian Evening Cape Detail Close-up

Capes were the basic wrap of the 1890's decade. This black two layer elbow length cape would not have provided much warmth so it was likely an evening cape. The outer layer is made of heavy stiff decorated and braided cotton tape in curvilinear designs, much like battenburg tape, but heavier and more decorative. It creates an almost cage effect over the black silk lining. It fastens at the mid front neck with double black satin ribbon ties. The 1" tall stand up collar has a second pleated 2" wide stand up collar of heavy silk ribbon edged in 3" wide gathered alencon type lace. The overall effect is very airy and feminine. It is not only wearable for special occasions, it would also make a wonderful display piece. The images have been lightened in order to show details.
