1920's Unique Black Lace Silk and Taffeta Dress 9-214

Dating this unique complicated dress was a puzzle. After much study we finally settled on 1923-1924 because of the silhouette with a fitted top and tiered skirt, the fabric, the construction methods, and the mid calf length. It is made of four different fabrics: black cotton lace, light ecru colored silk crepe, and rust colored rayon taffeta. The under dress is made of black rayon twill. The bodice with a dropped waist has a 9" long collar across the back neck which tapers to a 4" wide shallow V pointed collar of black lace over light ecru silk. The sleeves have a 5 1/2" wide ecru band at the bottom with a 1 1/2" wide cuff with black lace overlay which close with snaps. The high round neckline has a long rounded 5" wide inset yoke below it with a triangular piece of ecru colored silk on each side with ties with squared ends for a center front bow. The inner bodice has a 1" wide band of rust taffeta across the horizontal top with 1 1/2" wide black straps. The four split flounces on the skirt are edged with black hemstitching. The first flounce is 4 1/2" wide, the second is 6" wide, the third is 7" wide, and the bottom one is 8 1/4" wide. The under dress has a 14" long side placket open to the under arm which closes with five snaps. The outer lace bodice has a 5" long placket with three snaps to provide access to the inner dress bodice.
