Large Crazy Spread H6-001

Crazy quilting is a tribute to women's thrift, resourceful and creativity. Crazy quilts were especially popular in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Many of the fabrics in this one appear to be have been saved from an earlier decade. This unusually large and plush heavy spread or throw has deep Victorian jewel colors in greens, brown, reds, tans, golds, maroons and more. Pieces are plain, striped and printed in velvets, plushes, wide wale corduroy, sateens and upholstery fabric. Especially interesting are the fuzzy strokable pieces of mohair. Each piece and each square is outlined with cross stitches in aqua or gold heavy cotton thread. The backing is of heavy weight medium burgundy colored ribbed rayon. This later fabric was probably originally draperies. The backing wraps around the front and is hand stitched to make a 2 1/2" binding. The backing is attached only by the binding.
