1930's Alternating Pattern Suiting Tied Wool Quilt H6-005

Warm, useful and decorative folk art quilt alternates plain 7" square patches with patches made of 4 smaller pieces. This type of folk art quilt was popular in the 1920's and 1930's. The colors of the wool fabrics are gray, brown and red tweeds and dark browns, olive green and other color wool flannels. It may have been started with an overall design in mind, but it ended up with some red sections near the right hand side (at the top of the image) and a 14" square light taupe upper left hand corner (bottom right of the image). One wonders if someone other than the original maker had to finish it. Its length was extended with a band of black and dark blue small squares at one end. It is tied with red, turquoise, aqua, tan and pink wool yarn. It has medium weight cotton batting. The backing is striped cotton flannel in olives, rust and golds which wraps around on one side and part of the top for a partial binding. The other edges are finished, but unbound.
