Sunbonnets
Sunbonnets are flattering, attractive, practical head coverings worn from the early 1800's until today. The majority have tall, large crowns and wide generous brims to shade faces from the sun. Many have back neck flaps to protect the neck from sunburn. Some have double ties for adjustable fit and to prevent them from being blown off by the wind as a a straw hat could be. All cotton bonnets are washable and some open flat for easy ironing. Slat bonnets had sections in the brim in which slats could be inserted for shaping and stiffness. Today they are cardboard, but lucky girls from the past had a doting grandpa or a beau who carefully carved them from wood. The sunbonnets below were made within the past 50 years for reenactments, centennial celebrations, for use in parades or as costumes.
